Why pay for software when you can get it for free. I have listed some of my favourites for you and will aim to add more over time.

Let's start by looking at privacy and security

Ad – Aware Is a fantastic anti-spyware tool. In my opinion it is the best it scans your computer for any dodgy software you can then remove the infection. It is simple to install and you can have it up and running within minutes.

Spy Bot search and destroy

Just like ad aware Spy Bot hunts down and removes any spyware that might be hidden on your computer. It's regularly updated and very very easy to use, what is good with this piece of software is that it works alongside other antivirus tools without any conflictions.

Kee Pass

If you're like me you have dozens of passwords for different websites and software. So how do you remember so many passwords. Do you use the same password for everything, which becomes a security issue and defeats the object off having a password in the first place. Take a look at Kee Pass it might just be the answer you're looking for it can create secure passwords store them and even help you copy them into websites. All you have to do is remember the single password it uses to secure all the others, just don't forget that password!

Communication and chatting.

The only one that I can truly recommend is Skype. Although international calls are getting cheaper, but you still can't get any cheaper than the free calls that you can make with Skype.I put the software on my computer here in the UK and then installed the software on my brother's computer in Australia and we chat to one another for free. You can also connect a WebCam and make video calls so if you have friends or relatives abroad this software has to be a must have.

Optimize that PC

Okay so you have a new hard drive on your PC and its a speed demon. But give it a couple of months of heavy use and it will be a slow and sluggish like a snail. So what can you do? I recommend the following two pieces of software that should keep things in order.

Auslogics Disk Defrag

To make things go a little bit faster you should defrag your disk. Auslogics Disk Defrag Can be left running overnight And it will put your files in order Which means your system will start up faster and the program's will also appear to be running smoother.

Disc Burning

Want to burn CDs but don't want software that is full of gadgets. Then take a look at CDBurnerXP
It can burn any kind off disk you can even use it to write to blue ray disk's If you have a compatible drive.

This software is so easy to use you can create a CD or DVD disc with just a few simple mouse clicks. If you want simplicity and a quality product then this is it.

Office and Work

Open Office

If you thought Microsoft office was the benchmark for a suite of office tools Then look again in my opinion open office is the best it has a word processor and spreadsheet and even presentation tools you can even use the files within Microsoft Office you can even create PDF files. Personally I think this is the best free piece of software on the net today.

Pnotes

Has your PC being covered with yellow sticky's then maybe it's time to change with this software you can create sticky notes without them ever losing their stickiness. You can even change the yellow color, to any color you like . You can add alarms to each note so you wont forget that important date.

Photo,Video and Audio

The Gimp

This free image editor is just amazing, it is packed with professional features it is a little bit difficult to use for the first time. However,it doesn't take too long to get used to it and you can produce some amazing pictures.

Mediamonkey

Do you need to catalog your music on your PC then look no further Media Monkey is the answer. You can also use it to synchronize with a selection of portable players.

Picasa
Digital photography is fantastic you can take hundreds of photos just on one disc. However,  it can be a pain trying to organize your photos. Take a look at Google Picasa apart from being free includes features such as red eye removal making a good program for all digital enthusiasts.

Backup and Disk Tools

Cobian Backup
Do you need a simple backup tool then this is a good choice. You can set it to copy files to an external hard disc. You can also get it to scheduled backups on a regular basis. Everybody needs to backup that data if you want a simple solution then take a look at Cobian backup.

Syncplicity
Online backup is becoming the norm. However trying to find a simple solution is not that easy. Syncplicity could be your answer The web-based access makes it easy to locate your files from any Internet connected computer. You can store up to 2 GB of files on the server's so what are you waiting for take a look and don't forget it's free!

Web Browser Tools

Firefox3
I have used Internet Explorer (IE) for many years, however just recently I have used Firefox3 and have to say it is faster very simple to use and has hundreds off add ons giving you a lot more features than IE. If you haven't tried it yet take a look you might be pleasantly surprised.

Google Chrome
If you're not impressed with Firefox three and check out Google's browser Chrome. It is very simple to use and I believe this is its main advantage over the other popular browsers. It is good to see a browser that is not messy and complicated to use it is also very fast and there is even a feature that allows you to surf privately.
